The Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Healthcare System are a major employer in Sayre. and out reaching communities.

The Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre, PA started out in the Robert Packer mansion of the Lehigh Valley Railroad, Robert Packer. After his passing in 1883, his sister, Mary Packer Cummings ,donated the mansion to the Lehigh Valley Railroad to be used as a hospital with the stipulation there is to be no discrimination to anyone seeking care. In 1885, the Robert Packer Hospital opened its doors . Many of the patients ar the time were Lehigh Valley employees. In 1910, Dr. Donald Guthrie arrived in Sayre and established the Guthrie Medical Group. Dr. Guthrie model his leadership after the Mayo Clinic where he interned. By the late 1920s Dr. Guthrie had 27 physicians working under him in a four-story building located in Sayre.

In 1933, a fire caused damaged to parts of the Robert Packer Hospital. Shortly after the fire, the hospital was running again. In late 1934, an entire new eight story building was opened. Today, Guthrie Medical Group holds six hospitals and 76 regional offices, covering over 10,000 square miles. Today, Guthrie offer almost 1,000 primary providers and specialist who treats over 1.5 million patients a year.
